Black Butte Lake Crappie Tips: [ Add Tip ]
- Was on the lake 03/23/13. I boat & scanned the whole lake & water is extremely low. Besides the
dam, the Deepest was 9ft at Orland camp. All forest is exposed giving crappies no area to breed yet.
Water still too cold for crappies to start breeding anyways. We found a school of shad deep at the
dam near eagles past and caught a total of 24 crappies in 5 hours during noon time. Had to
constantly chase and locate the moving fish. Use white jigs and live minow then jig deep. Night
fishing off shore with lamp does okay. Without more water into the lake, I doubt we will have a
plentiful of fish next year.
Crappie Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
Crappie fishing is sometimes at its best with the water temperature down this low. Crappie will be in large schools and follow the large shad schools around in extremely deep water. Find the deepest parts of your lake in old river channels and scan your graph for schooling shad. When you find the school, drop your plastics or live bait down to the bottom of the shad and get ready. Many crappie fishermen will be catching awesome numbers and size of fish this time of year. If you are brave enough to get out on the water this time when the water temperature is this cold, it can really pay off. Be careful out there, remember to boat safely. Never take any chances at these temperatures.
