On 4/24/12 My father and I caught caught and released 11 large mouths. One at just over 4 lbs, one about 2 1/2 lbs, and the rest around 1-1 1/2 lbs. Caught the first 2 in the early morning on a white and silver top water popper. Then the rest during a 2 hour span around lunch time, 11-1 o\'clock, on dark plastic worms and lizards with tails dipped in garlic. Was a great day on Old Hickory!

Saturday April 7 I was on Old Hickory today with John and his son John who were the winners of a free trip from Doug Markham's Outdoor show. John had called and setup a walleye trip and then we had to move it to today. I was a little concerned with all the warm weather but pretty sure we would figure it out quickly, which we did. We checked 2 areas and the 1st had nothing happening and then the 2nd had fish but the current was too swift. We then moved to our final location and had a blast. We caught over 30 walleye and sauger and a myriad of other fish. I had an absolute blast and look forward to going out with John and his son again, we discussed a trip while we were out there. We caught our fish on 8lb test Suffix Pro-Mix, 5/8th oz jigs tipped with minnows bouncing the bottom. If you are interested in taking a trip contact Mark and have your day setup for you. Largemouth Bass Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
Largemouth bass fishing is in full spawn now the water temperature has climbed up to 61 degrees. The large female bass will be on the beds and holding tight. Spawning bass won't be feeding aggressively at this water temperature but they will be catchable. In addition, all bass don't spawn at the exact same time or water temperature. If you aren't a site fisherman, you should be able to find some larger females and male largemouth on the standard spring patterns. Female bass will really start to slow down on feeding so fishing is going to be slower for a few weeks until they move into active patterns again.
Old Hickory Lake Smallmouth Bass Rating:
2.5
Old Hickory Lake Smallmouth Bass Tips: [ Add Tip ]
- Can't believe OH is rated two and a half for smallmouth... I live on this lake and fish it three to four time a week... I started targeting smallmouth several years ago... I go to Dale Hollow often and catch lots of smallmouth. Very few Smallmouth on OH and they are very small... not the right habitat...
Smallmouth Bass Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The smallmouth bass spawn is in full swing now. Fishing will become slower but won't turn off completely. If you are fishing for female bass go with plastics and really slow your presentation and stay around the spawning beds. You should be able to find some larger females and male bass on the standard spring patterns. Female bass will really start to slow down on feeding and the fishing is going to be slower for a few weeks until they move into active patterns again. Hit the water NOW, we can?t believe you are reading this and not fishing right now. GET OUT!!
Old Hickory Lake Crappie Rating:
3.5
Old Hickory Lake Crappie Tips: [ Add Tip ]
- We were catching striped bass on ratlers real steady for about an hour, regretfully none were large enough to keep but we had fun. My son caught a 16 large mouth bass using a crawdad rig. With the warmer weather the water tempature averaged 59 to 61 degrees. Water clarity was good (you could see your lures 2 to 3 feet down.

Crappie Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The crappie spawn should be really heating up now. Crappie prefers to spawn on gravel bottom typically with brush and/or emergent vegetation for cover. If the lake is void of gravel bottoms, find the rocks or rip rap. Crappie will use the larger structure rocks for cover. Cast some small grub baits in the shallows looking for the spawning crappie. Good luck today!
Old Hickory Lake Walleye Rating:
2.5
Old Hickory Lake Walleye Tips: [ Add Tip ]
Walleye Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The walleye are coming off of the spawn now. Fish will be feeding very more aggressive making up for lost time eating during the spawn. Walleye will start moving back to their typical structure of choice and should be getting into the lake flats and deep structure. It?s time to hit the water. This may be the best water temperature to be on the water. There shouldn?t be too many fishermen on the water this early and there are many species that are hitting their prime water temperatures to be biting very well. Have fun today!
Old Hickory Lake Catfish Rating:
3.5
Old Hickory Lake Catfish Tips: [ Add Tip ]
- I think the rating should be closer to 5 out of 5. I hear they are on fire, expecially below the dam. (today is 6/16/10)
Catfish Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The water temperature is climbing and the catfish will start becoming more active now. The catfish spawn is right around the corner and generally all catfish species will be looking to spawn. Blue catfish, flathead and channel catfish spawn in much the same areas. Mostly spawning in deep tree lay downs that have lots of shade, holes in the bank, sunken barrels and tires. With baitfish becoming active, it?s time to catch some small sunfish, bluegill, shad and frogs and getting the line in the water.
Old Hickory Lake Spotted Bass Rating:

Current Lunar Fishing Tip:

The crescent moon will have better gravitational pull than a gibbous or half moon. However the affects of the moons gravitational will be decreased since the sun and moon aren't pulling in conjunction with one another. It's time to pay close attention to the other fishing factors in the weather to make the best decision for hitting the water.
